Passing The Exams

PASSING THE EXAMS!
During the training, exams are the ultimate destination for every section. Be it Safety, Service or First Aid. As stated in the earlier chapters, these exams are conducted on the lines of the civil aviation regulatory authority of the country. For India, it is DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation). Hence these exams are of a very high quality and the marking is also tough. Hence to clear them, the trainee has to be completely prepared with every aspect, being totally thorough with the manual provided.

It must be understood by now that this training is of a rigorous nature. The reason is very clear. This is a field where there is no room for deviation especially in safety procedures. Hence the airline wants to be completely sure that you graduate from the training centre as a Perfect Cabin Crew. You being the face of the airline, carry its image whenever you are in the uniform. Hence not being clear in your concepts, not being up to the mark, or lacking in any aspect would act as an obstruction for the Airline to achieve its ultimate mission and they definitely don’t want any mark on their shirt. They will only be interested in you only and till the time you are productive for their organization, add value and growth to it. Hence, it is a constant effort that you need to put in even after years of service. Remember it is always survival of the fittest!

The exams are concluded with a viva – voice, where after your SEP card will be signed. We will talk about it in the next chapter in detail. The viva – voice is to test the level of confidence in handling emergencies, presence of mind, knowledge of concepts and procedures. This is generally the last stage of assessments. However apart from written and viva’s, there are also certain assessments that need to be cleared such as SLIDE DRILL, FIRE DRILL and DITCHING DRILL. These drills are situational such as the slide drill is done on a real slide where each crew is given an emergency situation and s/he has to act accordingly. In the fire drill, there is a real fire which is to be fought with a real fire extinguisher taking all the precautions and following every single procedure as would be performed on the real flight. In the ditching drill, the assessment is done in the swimming pool where a raft similar to the one on board will be floating in the water and appropriate procedures are to be followed by the trainee crew as if it is a real emergency happening.

All this constitutes the exam pattern and it is compulsory for every trainee to clear them with the specified percentage which is generally quite high. After your batch is done with all the training, exams and base allocations, it time for a party! This is the graduation party, which is the last day in your training centre  now you formally graduate from there and celebrate to go onboard!

Till now you were under the guidance of able faculty members and treated as new comers where certain mistakes were overlooked. But now the situation will be totally different as you now hold a valid SEP card and a lot of things would be expected. Now there won’t be any faculty members whom you would have been familiar till now. There would be seniors who would have been flying from a long time and they expect you to come prepared from your training center.

Definitely you would also come across some senior crew who would be very helpful and teach you like a mentor.

Hence now you are all on your own. Be alert, confident and smiling.

My Formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I Occupy Myself as Best I can.

Stages In the Process of Cabin Crew Promotion

Promotion for any Cabin Crew is based on experience and performance. From the role of Cabin Crew member, it is possible to progress to Purser or Chief Purser and In Flight Director [ IFD ]. The same responsibilities as the general Cabin Crew are still held but the purser is also given the Management Responsibilities of a certain cabin, such as first class or business class.

As the purser, you would ensure that all crew within your cabin deliver the highest level of customer service. You would also give feedback on their performance and try to boost sales of duty-free items. Most airlines require between two to five years of experience to become a purser.

From the role of purser you can progress to senior Cabin Crew. This position is also known at some airlines as cabin supervisors or cabin service directors. The role is very similar to that of purser except you have responsibility for all Cabin Crew on board, not just in one particular cabin. All Cabin Crew and the purser and/or chief purser would report to you. You would usually be involved with training and supervising new recruits and would have to ensure all relevant paperwork was completed at the end of the flight.

Some air Cabin Crew may also wish to move on to become VVIP Cabin Crew. This type of work is carried out with very important private clients usually on private aircraft. The clients are typically prestigious and may include government officials or royal families. Therefore, the highest level of service is expected and employers usually require at the very least two years' experience of working in premium (business or first) class. Many VVIP positions are based in wealth areas of the Middle East.

Some Cabin Crew members may decide that they want to move into ground-based operations such as Cabin Crew training or recruitment, passenger services or crew controller.

Air Cabin Crew are the main point of contact for air passengers and are responsible for ensuring that they have a safe journey, as well as one that is pleasant and comfortable. Cabin Crew teams are trained to deal with the safety and security of passengers during a flight, which can include directing passengers in emergency situations. They also prepare the aircraft for flight and deal with passenger needs, including serving food and drink and providing assistance with boarding and disembarking.

Before boarding the aircraft, the air Cabin Crew are briefed about their flight. Then, once on board, they may be responsible for  checking the plane is clean and tidy and stocked with food and drinks  checking emergency equipment is working  liaising with other airport staff, such as ground handling services, about aircraft load weight and passenger numbers  overseeing the boarding of passengers  making sure passengers' hand luggage is safely stored away and that all passengers  are wearing seat belts  informing passengers of the aircraft safety procedures serving and selling meals, drinks, gifts and duty-free products  communicating with the pilot or captain during the flight and sharing information with passengers  dealing with any problems that passengers have during the flight, for example if they fall ill or if they are disturbing other passengers  making sure passengers disembark safely on landing.

In addition to these tasks, air Cabin Crew are also required to complete paperwork such as flight reports and bar paperwork.
r

Hours and environment

There is no typical working week for air Cabin Crew. They work irregular hours  including nights, public holidays and weekends. Part-time and seasonal work may also be possible.

Cabin Crew have to be flexible about the routes that they fly. Some air Cabin Crew may work  only on short flights, such as European or internal flights. Others may work on long-haul  flights, with long periods spent away from home.

The working environment is demanding. Cabin space is restricted and the galley where cabin crew prepare meals and refreshments is a small area. A lot of time is spent moving from galley to cabin, standing up and attending to passengers. Cabin Crew may experience jetlag due to crossing different time zones in a single flight.
Air Cabin Crew wear a uniform and must be well groomed, with no visible tattoos or body piercings. They must clearly wear their company identification badge/pass at all times.

Acquiring The License

ACQUIRING THE LICENSE
Acquiring the license to fly is not a cakewalk as is thought by many. It is the result of constant hard work, discipline and preparation of two to three months. This license is known as Safety Emergency Procedures Card/ License.
It is issued to a Cabin Crew trainee once s/he has passed all the safety exams and viva voice. It has the photograph of the trainee with the employee Id, name of the airline, and a stamp of the airline. Inside the card, the type of aircraft is mentioned on which you have been successfully trained. There is the signature of the trainer validating that the trainee is officially permitted to operate his/her familiarization flights.

After getting the stamp and sign from the training centre, the trainee is rostered for the first flight which is known as His/her Familiarization flight. In short, known as FAM flight. The actual motive of providing this fam flight is to familiarize the new crew with the actual working on board. This is not only just for the fam crew to get familiarized, s/he is constantly under the scanner of the senior crew members. Starting from the briefing for the flight, the fam crew is asked certain questions to judge the level of information s/he carries from the training. Even on the flight, s/he has the full liberty to clarify any doubts that still cloud in the mind. After this Fam flight, the respective form is filled by the senior most crew member after evaluating the overall performance of the fam crew member. Every fam flight of the crew is also mentioned in the SEP card. There may be more than one fam flights, depending on the policy of the Airline, however in case it is felt by the management that a crew needs more fam flights,it may do so.

After the completion of all the fam flights, there is one check flight which is kind of a test flight for the crew. You can say that fam flights provide learning and an opportunity to clear doubts and check flights is an assessment of the same. Here the evaluation is much more strict as you will be expected to operate the flight as a normal online crew does, since after you clear this flight, on the next one you’ll fly as an online crew! All on yourself.

This check flight may or may not be cleared by the crew depending upon the performance. If not, sufficient time is again given to the new crew to prepare and fly again for the check flight. If failed again, the management takes a decision.

Once the check flight is cleared, there is generally a viva voice by the manager of the allotted base to the crew. On clearing this, all the formalities are done and the license is again validated having completed the check flight successfully.

This license has to be carried at all times whenever operating a flight. It is checked by the senior crew member in all the briefings and failing to produce the same will prohibit you to fly for the day.

The Sep license expires after one year. Hence to renew this, recurrents are held every year by the airline in their training centers  Here too the same procedure is covered of training and then exams, however it may be a matter of only a week now and hands on experience of one year acquired over this one year period makes it less complicated now.

All the best and Fly High!!!

“A mind troubled by doubt cannot focus on the course to victory.”

Cabin Crew Service Training

SERVICE TRAINING
Service training of an Airline depends on the type of Aircraft that the Airline operates. The modules or curriculum is prepared in the manner that the procedures of service do not interfere with the procedures of safety.

The training comprises of -

1.    On – Ground Supervisory duties while food, beverages and related articles are loaded in the aircraft by the catering staff
2.    Maintaining the relevant documents for the same
3.    On Ground services
4.    Division of duties among the crew members
5.    Heating of the meals at appropriate temperature
6.    Safety procedures while handling hot meals out of the oven
7.    In – Flight Services
8.    Procedures for different flight timings
9.    Procedures for different duration of flights (long haul and short haul)

The services differ in Economy Class and Business Class of the flight. Generally there are limited options of food and beverage in economy class. The services offered are also limited such as entertainment, reading material etc.

The Business Class on the other hand has wider range of services ranging from food and beverages to comfort to entertainment.

The services differ on domestic flights and international flights especially with regard to alcohol service. It is banned on Indian routes by the Government of India. Also since most of the international flights are long haul, hence the range of services also is wide.

The new concept of low frill airlines also started with Air Deccan coming into the scene in India, which was initially a concept of the west. Here the services are generally brief and Sales on Board takes place. This is a tedious process for the crew as they need to be vigilant regarding the uplift, sales and the left over stock. The counting has to be perfect with the cash in hand. In case there is any discrepancy, generally the Cabin Crew members need to pay for the same to cover the difference.

Hence, all these aspects in detail are covered in the Airline’s Service Training. Mock sessions are held to make the trainee’s comfortable when they operate their first flight. The trainee’s also are trained in the aspects of communication, mannerisms, speed to work in limited time efficiently and much more.

There is an exam for the same and a viva voice too. Once it is cleared, you are all set to Fly!

“It’s not what you achieve, it’s what you overcome. That’s what defines your career.”

First Aid Training

FIRST AID TRAINING

First Aid training forms a part of Initial as well as all others such as recurrents, refreshers among others. It forms the basis of Cabin Crew profile as he/she will be the first person who will be able to administer the casualty on board, use the medical equipments, and call for a doctor. Hence it is extremely important for a Cabin Crew member to be thorough with the same.
The Airline’s provide detailed training and design a curriculum for the same. The trainers are the doctors who train the Cabin Crew and ensure that they understand the symptoms, the reasons, the first aid to be given, the documents to be maintained and most important not to panic.
The diseases range from nose bleeding to heart attack to stroke to birth of a child and much more. There is an exam for the same and once the trainee clears it, he/she has to go through the viva voice. This too is a rigorous training as safety and it can be a little difficult to grasp it all at once as it will be a different field of study altogether. However everyday revision and correct understanding of the concepts will make be helpful.

Please understand that there is no attempt to turn you into a doctor. It is to prepare you just perfectly to handle any medical emergency on board. Remember you may save a life one day!

There are certain medical equipments that are available on board to be used in such emergencies by the Cabin Crew. These are a Medical Handy Kit, a First Aid Kit, an Oxygen Bottle, a Defibrillator and  a Physician Kit too to be operated only by a Registered Medical Practitioner.

The training also includes the communication between the cockpit and cabin. This is to ensure that there’s no delay in the treatment of the passenger, appropriate decisions can be taken for an immediate landing or not and the help of personnel and ambulance is available on ground.

There needs to be a proper and effective communication between the Cabin Crew members. There is no scope for a miscommunication here. Any delay or a wrong step may cost heavily!

It is very important to prepare yourself from the day one. This is because studying from books and giving exams seem pretty easy however when one faces the real situations, especially mid air with no help available, he/ she tends to panic( which is natural). But you as a Cabin Crew cannot let it overtake you as the passenger might be fighting for his/ her life and you’ll be the sole rescuer!

So fasten your belts and if you are sure you can hit the nail, go for it!

“Find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it.”
