ACQUIRING THE LICENSE
Acquiring the license to fly is not a cakewalk as is thought by many. It is the result of constant hard work, discipline and preparation of two to three months. This license is known as Safety Emergency Procedures Card/ License.
It is issued to a Cabin Crew trainee once s/he has passed all the safety exams and viva voice. It has the photograph of the trainee with the employee Id, name of the airline, and a stamp of the airline. Inside the card, the type of aircraft is mentioned on which you have been successfully trained. There is the signature of the trainer validating that the trainee is officially permitted to operate his/her familiarization flights.



After getting the stamp and sign from the training centre, the trainee is rostered for the first flight which is known as His/her Familiarization flight. In short, known as FAM flight. The actual motive of providing this fam flight is to familiarize the new crew with the actual working on board. This is not only just for the fam crew to get familiarized, s/he is constantly under the scanner of the senior crew members. Starting from the briefing for the flight, the fam crew is asked certain questions to judge the level of information s/he carries from the training. Even on the flight, s/he has the full liberty to clarify any doubts that still cloud in the mind. After this Fam flight, the respective form is filled by the senior most crew member after evaluating the overall performance of the fam crew member. Every fam flight of the crew is also mentioned in the SEP card. There may be more than one fam flights, depending on the policy of the Airline, however in case it is felt by the management that a crew needs more fam flights,it may do so.


After the completion of all the fam flights, there is one check flight which is kind of a test flight for the crew. You can say that fam flights provide learning and an opportunity to clear doubts and check flights is an assessment of the same. Here the evaluation is much more strict as you will be expected to operate the flight as a normal online crew does, since after you clear this flight, on the next one you’ll fly as an online crew! All on yourself.


This check flight may or may not be cleared by the crew depending upon the performance. If not, sufficient time is again given to the new crew to prepare and fly again for the check flight. If failed again, the management takes a decision.

Once the check flight is cleared, there is generally a viva voice by the manager of the allotted base to the crew. On clearing this, all the formalities are done and the license is again validated having completed the check flight successfully.


This license has to be carried at all times whenever operating a flight. It is checked by the senior crew member in all the briefings and failing to produce the same will prohibit you to fly for the day.

The Sep license expires after one year. Hence to renew this, recurrents are held every year by the airline in their training centers  Here too the same procedure is covered of training and then exams, however it may be a matter of only a week now and hands on experience of one year acquired over this one year period makes it less complicated now.
